Business cards, in hand

Business card makers and printers, compared in plain words

Business Card Review Hub looks at the tools people use to design a business card and the services that print it: what each one does well, where it falls short, and which kind of card it suits. The first reviews are being written now.

What gets looked at

Six things every business card review covers

A card is judged in the hand, so a review has to get past the editor and the price and into the paper, the finish and the proof.

Paper

Stock and thickness

How heavy the card is, how it is quoted, and whether a printer says plainly which paper you are getting.

Surface

Finishes

Matte, gloss, uncoated, soft-touch, foil and spot coating, and what each one asks of the design file.

Format

Sizes and shapes

Standard sizes by country, square and slim cards, rounded corners, and whether the templates match.

Design

The design tools

Browser editors and the editors built into print services: templates, brand colours, and exporting a print-ready file.

File

Bleed and safe area

Whether a tool shows the trim and safe lines, and whether it warns you before type runs too close to the edge.

Order

Proofs, quantities and delivery

What the proof shows before you pay, the smallest run on offer, and what a reprint costs you in time.

From file to box

Design, proof, print

Every service follows the same three steps. They differ in how much help they give you at each one.

  1. Design

Start from a template sized for your printer, or set the size yourself and add your name, role and how to reach you.

  2. Proof

Check spelling, check that nothing sits outside the safe area, and look at colours on the proof rather than the screen.

  3. Print

Choose the stock, the finish and the quantity, then compare what arrives against the proof you approved.

The rules every review here is written to

Set down before the first review is published, so there is something to hold them to.

Rule one

Opinions in words, never in numbers

Where one tool or printer suits a job better than another, the review says so and gives the reason. There are no scores or star ratings.

Rule two

Prices from the provider, with a date

Prices and paper options change. A review quotes them from the provider's own page and says when they were checked.

Rule three

Ordinary links

Links to the tools and printers named here carry no tracking and earn nothing, so no review has a reason to favour one.
